Morgan recently launched an interactive youth theatre program in Norfolk/Haldimand Country aimed at getting young people participating in theatre and is aimed at youth from ages 6 - 18. She developed this program as an honours thesis project while earning her Bachelor of Arts Honors Degree in Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. Good Idea! Theatre Company runs weekly classes in Delhi on Thursday nights.

Morgan has professionally written and directed, dozens of youth productions such as her thesis project "Jack/Matilda and the Beanstalk" which ran at the Lighthouse Theatre. Morgan is also an accomplished performer having worked on several television and movie sets including Disney's film Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers. A Port Dover native, Morgan is a former member of the LFT Young Company, and is looking forward to making this exciting new program available to all the youth of Norfolk/Haldimand County.

Acting serves up life lessons

Theatre teaches conflict resolution, time management

Community theatre actress Coco Lee is handing out a backstage pass to the world of theatre this summer. She will be hosting three, two-week sessions to nurture young actors and actresses. (Barbara Simpson Delhi News-Record)

Theatre can be the stage to developing a strong backbone of personal qualities.

That's what local actress Coco Lee has learned from her years on community theatre stages. Performing in the Best Christmas Pageant Ever at the age of 8, Lee, now 18, has been acting — and writing, stage managing and eventually directing — ever since her debut. She has been involved with the bulk of local theatre troops, and of course, her schools' theatre productions.

"You put so much work into it," she described. " I mean, you go home and complain and complain and complain. But there's always one rehearsal where things fall into place…"

She credits her theatre responsibilities for helping her develop a strong host of personal values. For example, working with fellow cast members establishes a set of conflict resolution skills. And the very nature of a live performance cements a sense of adaptability — a trait required by many workplaces.

"We can't pretend you're totally prepared for every working day of your life," she added.

In one of her final acts, Lee will be passing on her theatre know-how through a summer camp before heading off to the University of Toronto. She will be hosting the inaugural Backstage Pass summer camp — "your child's VIP ticket to the exciting world of theatre," according to her press release.

Her three, two-week summer sessions will couple acting fundamentals with the opportunity for participants to develop their own musical. This summer camp will take place at Delhi's Backstage Capitol — a special treat for Delhi and area children, Lee added.

Growing up, the Delhi actress had to pursue theatre in outside communities, such as Simcoe and Port Dover. She admits transportation proved to be a challenge.

"Driving to Simcoe every day was a hassle for everyone," she added.

Juggling a young actor's many responsibilities is also a challenge.

"Mainly it's trying to find a balance between your school obligations, your work obligations and your theatre obligations," she added.

However, she believes that children can maximize their experiences by starting theatre relatively young.

"It's a confidence thing," she added. "If you haven't been on stage until 16, you won't have that confidence."

Young participants in her summer camp will be charged with creating their own musicals from scratch. They will do the range of theatre roles, from writing the script to even designing the costumes. At the end of their two-week session, they will stage their production for their parents.

"Musicals are always fun to watch for everyone, especially because you can incorporate dance," she added.

The summer camp takes place over three sessions from July 12 to 23, July 26 to Aug. 6, and Aug. 9 to 20. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with early and late pick-up also available at an additional cost. Registration is $250 per child. DDSS students liven up community stage in first showcase

If art is the reflection of a community, then local Delhi students flew open the doors to their own world by showcasing their rich palate of arts last Tuesday.

A collective of artistically-minded students and teachers at Delhi District Secondary School staged the inaugural Raider Arts Showcase at Backstage Capitol. It featured students and teachers from all artistic stripes — visual, musical and dramatic — showcasing their work on a community stage. Pieces of student art greeted the public in the local theatre's foyer, while cast members of the school's two current productions — Fleggar and The Wizard of Oz — entertained the packed theatre. Even some brave teachers ventured onto the stage, showcasing their own artistic talents by playing instruments and singing.

"A lot of the people we asked if they could do something today, so all things considered, they did really well," said Coco Lee, student organizer of the artistic showcase, during an intermission at the event.

In fact, some of these performances were even a surprise to the organizer. As Lee was winding down the first half of the showcase, Fleggar cast member Steven Reynaert announced he had a special performance. He then burst into a selection of Disney tunes, eventually asking fellow cast member Tyler VanHerzele to join him in a rendition of Hanuka Matata.

But some stuck with the more traditional. Student pianist Heather Myers played the song Nunsense is Habit-Forming — a plug to the upcoming community production of Nunsense set to appear at Backstage — and accompanied music teacher Janine Goodall who played her flute. Even Sears Drama staff adviser Natalie Woron blew the dust off her guitar, playing and singing a self-penned tune entitled The Song After the Last Song to a full theatre.

"I'm absolutely tickled," Woron said of the community response. "The cliché thing is that these kids work hard."

While the arts showcase was staged to help raise funds for the cast of Fleggar's upcoming Hamilton trip, its secondary mission was to shine a spotlight on the high school's thriving artistic scene.

"When the school sees the community, they only see the sports," Lee explained, adding it was the first time the school has partnered with Backstage — a venture she would like to see continue due to its "beautiful space."

Audience members were also treated to a showing of the 25-minute Sears Drama production of Fleggar. The DDSS original play was one of three high school productions that won at the district competition, allowing them to advance to the regional showcase in Hamilton for the first time in the school's history. While the cast will only be spending the day in Hamilton, the ensemble needs to raise $800 to rent a trailer and a bus, Lee explained.

Comedy hits stage in inaugural community theatre production

While nuns may stereotypically lack funny bones, local actresses are putting a comedic spin on these religious authoritarians, doling out their own first communion of community theatre at Backstage Capitol.

The musical comedy Nunsense is being staged by a team of local actresses, including Nunsense veteran Joan Minnery who has appeared in several sequels in the popular theatre series. It also marks the first community theatre production that Backstage Capitol has undertaken, requiring the local theatre to purchase the rights to stage the Catholic comedy.

"It's very, very funny," said Minnery, who is both directing and starring in the local production. "There is a lot of Catholic humour and I'm a Catholic and we laugh at ourselves anyway."

The Catholic comedy follows the antics of the Little Sisters of Hoboken when they return from an African mission. They discover that their cook, Sister Julia, has accidentally poisoned 52 sisters, but they only have enough money to bury 48 of them. The ragtag group of nuns — Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices, Sister Robert Anne, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and Sister Mary Amnesia, a nun who has lost her memory after a crucifix fell on her head — decide to put on a variety show to raise the much-needed money. The audience is treated with a variety of dance, comedic surprises, and of course, music.

The show's offering of song will even make the most stringent Catholics giggle; the cast starts off the production with their theme song Nunsense is Habit-Forming and later on entertains with the tune Tackle That Temptation with a Time-Step.

The fun of the Catholic comedic series has created truly habit-forming behaviour for Minnery. The Brantford actress has starred as Sister Robert Anne in three sequels to the original Nunsense. However, this is the first time she has directed a Nunsense play — a feat she has found difficult while also starring in habit on the big stage.

"What I told the girls is it is hard to act and direct," she explained, adding she has sat out of some rehearsals to watch her fellow actresses perform.

Over the last few months, she and the rest of the cast — local actresses Tessa Farkas, Tara Powell-Geysens, Tina Gates and Christine Trembley-Brown — have bonded on stage. So much so that they are creating their own singing group Diamond Divas after their local run of Nunsense is over.

Nun will be the word on April 23, 24 and 25 at Backstage Capitol. Evening shows are at 8 p.m. and the matinee show is at 4 p.m. For more information, visit backstagecapitol.com.

Community theatre appears to be alive and well in small town Delhi.

A little more than a week ago, the musical comedy Nunsense played to healthy-sized audiences on three consecutive days at the Backstage Capitol Theatre, earning plaudits each time for its characterizations, comedic timing and strong musical numbers.

It's something that's been missing in this town for many years. Anyone wishing to enjoy good community theatre had to at least travel to Simcoe, Tillsonburg or Brantford to experience it. Now that we're blessed with the ideal venue for local theatre — namely the Backstage Capitol — there are new opportunities to catch it in our own backyard.

There's more of it coming. On May 29, the same five ladies who performed in Nunsense will return to perform in a show of another kind, called Diamond Divas. Again, music will be at the forefront with a salute to the classic hits of yesteryear, including rock, country and pop. Having seen and enjoyed Nunsense, it is our plan to see what these same performers can do outside their habits.

As was the case with Nunsense, Diamond Divas will presumably be directed by Brantford's Joan Minnery, whose resume in local theatre cannot be summed up in one page. She has acted, directed and sang in countless stage performances, and teaches her craft to young and eager enthusiasts. Her involvement in Nunsense, doing double duty as director and performer, gave the production instant credibility. Although her four co-performers don't have quite the same amount of stage experience, they weren't at all out of place in Nunsense and, in fact, seemed to have a natural chemistry among them.

Diamond Divas is likely to be an apt follow-up to their first stage performance together as a unit.

At both community theatre performances I've attended since the opening of the Backstage Capitol — the other being Too Heavy to Fly in November 2008 — the atmosphere inside the building has been tailored to match the show itself. Ticket takers, ushers and those working the concession booth have attired themselves in costumes, which makes the patron feel as if he himself is a part of the show. These individuals wore the same habits as the stage performers, giving the show-goer a feel for what's about to come.

The cost of a ticket isn't going to set anyone back. For $15, the quality of entertainment was a bargain.

Who knows? If Diamond Divas is as well received as Nunsense, perhaps this five-woman ensemble will be contemplating new projects to tackle as a team.

The Backstage Capitol has become a nice little gem for Delhi. Aside from community theatre, there are a number of upcoming shows, which pay tribute to some of the finest musical performers of the past half-century, including Patsy Cline, Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash.

It’s amazing the amount of local talent we have in the area. A week and a half ago, several young musicians took to the stage at the Backstage Capitol Theatre to help raise funds at Concert to Cure III, and then, just this past weekend, the Delhi-based Canadian Country Cruisers put on three shows — a comedic music and dance performance called Too Heavy To Fly.

My wife and I took in the Cruisers’ Friday night show and were more than a little impressed with what we saw and heard…and smelled. This particular show had been presented before, but this time it took place at a venue tailor-made for the production. The theatre’s spacious stage, acoustics and state-of-the-art lighting were perfectly suited for the show which was to give patrons the feeling they were boarding a plane. Even the show tickets were designed to resemble airline boarding passes.

Adding to the ambience were the “metal detection” archway near the theatre’s entrance and the seating assistance provided by the show’s cast who were dressed in flight attendants’ and pilots’ uniforms, not to mention the “onboard movie” projected onto the stage’s drop screen which served as a prologue to the production itself. The short film, photographed in black and white, was meant to resemble something out of the Harold Lloyd era — a silent, slapstick comedy executed in a professional manner which gave the audience an idea of what was to follow. Filming, incidentally, was done on location in downtown Delhi with scenes shots inside Julie’s Travel and Simon’s Salon.

What followed was a well-written, well-acted, well-sung and well-danced production that could easily justify a tour to other towns and cities in the province if it wasn’t for the fact that most of the cast members have full-time jobs locally and would likely find it difficult to commit to anything quite so ambitious.

The show chronicled the adventures of two friends en route to a Hawaiian vacation, from their airport check-in to their long flight over the Pacific to their various missteps upon reaching their destination. Along the way, we run into some familiar faces, including Bubbles from The Trailer Park Boys and Ruth Buzzi’s famous Gladys, the spinster character from Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.

Too Heavy To Fly took full advantage of the theatre’s superior audio system, incorporating the sound of jet engines at takeoff and making sure the nearly 200 patrons could ably hear the chronic flatulence of “Susie,” played by Nadia Comer. Not only could we clearly hear her gaseous emissions, but the special effects team made sure we could smell them as well. Moments after Susie ripped a big one, the stench of rotten eggs came wafting through the audience. I turned to my wife and asked if she was smelling what I was smelling. The look on her face answered my question. At first I wasn’t sure if this was part of the show or if someone sitting near me simultaneously dealt a deadly one, but I figured it was likely part of the act when I learned later that patrons sitting 10 rows behind me were also gagging. Thankfully, the special effect was relatively short-lived. (By the way, did you know the reason God made farts smell? It's so deaf people can enjoy them, too)

The costume design, choreography and set design were all first class as well. Those who weren’t at the Backstage Capitol Theatre Friday and Saturday evenings and Saturday afternoon missed something special. Hopefully, this is just a taste of what this talented troupe of dancers/actors/singers have to offer. The Canadian Country Cruisers have already won international accolades for their fancy footwork. Last weekend showed their versatility goes well beyond their dancing capabilities.

It should be fun to see where they go next.

The classic ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight: The Sun Records Story’ is coming to Delhi’s Backstage Capitol Theatre.

The setting is July 1954 in Memphis Tennessee, and a 19-year-old unknown musician named Elvis Presley walks into a storefront recording studio named Sun Records to demo some songs for label owner, Sam Phillips.

After a few mediocre attempts at singing ballads, Presley sings an old blues song called “That’s All Right,” but putting his own twist on the classic, rocks the song with unique flavour. The result would come to be known as “Rockabilly” music, which would later be known around the world as rock and roll.

Elvis’ success on Sun Records garnered attention throughout the southern United Stated and soon, talent was exploding out of the label’s door.

Between 1954 and 1956, Phillips launched careers of Johnny Cash known as The Man in Black, who had hits including “I Walk the Line,” and “Folsom Prison Blues,” Carl Perkins whose famous hit was “Blue Suede Shoes,” Jerry Lee Lewis, the bogie-woogie piano master who recorded legendary tracks “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” and Roy Orbison, who scored an early rock’n’roll hit with “Ooby Dooby.”

This amazingly true story is now being re-told in a musical play that is currently touring major venues across North America and making a stop at the Delhi Backstage Capitol Theatre for two shows on Oct. 3.

The Backstage Capitol Theatre is excited to land this show for local audiences.

“’Good Rockin’ Tonight’ is an incredible show for the whole family, full of laughs and great music, and we’re thrilled to bring a show of this caliber to Delhi,” said theatre owner Jeff Maerten.

The two-act musical stars several notable Canadian musicians including Bill Culp, who plays Carl Perkins, Dave Tufford, acting as Jerry Lee Lewis, country crooner Jim Yorfido playing Johnny Cash and Djino Lefrancois as Elvis and Kevin Jollimore as Sam Phillips.

“As veteran musicians with our own careers, we have all serperately played music in our live shows over the years, so it’s a very natural and logical thing for us to do. Plus, we all firmly believe that the Sun Records Story is an important tale to tell… it was an incredible period for music,” said Culp. “This is a great combination of music and acting that is great for people of all ages who love Johnny Cash and Elvis tunes as well as musical history.”

Performing this hit production over the past three years during the spring and fall months around North America, Culp says this fall each tour stop is in Ontario.

“Some of us have played Delhi separately, but never together for this show,” he said. “I’m really excited for us to be in the quaint theatre.”

BACKSTAGE THEATRE: Gordie Tapp performs August 22

A true Canadian legend and member of the Canadian Country Music association Hall of Fame will be taking the stage at Delhi’s Backstage Capitol Theatre.

On Aug. 22, London, Ontario-native Gordie Tapp will be taking to the stage at the theatre with Nashville country recording artist Debbie Bayshaw.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to Delhi,” Tapp said during a telephone interview from his home in Rockwood, Ontario. “I have been to Delhi many times but have never performed there. I am very excited.”

In 1947 Tapp graduated from Lorne Greene’s Radio Art’s academy in Toronto and helped launch a Niagara Falls radio station.

A pioneer in the Canadian music industry he switched from playing dance music to country, and he never looked back.

Bayshaw – who currently lives in Ontario – has quite the resume herself opening for famous country musicians Garth Brooks, Eddie Rabbit, Glen Campbell and Tommy Hunter.

“I started on radio and did very well,” Tapp said. “When Hollywood came around, that was something I just couldn’t say no too. I have been very fortunate throughout my life but Canada is my home. I always kept my house here in Ontario and I just love it here.”

In the late 1950s he started a country music show for the CBC and then went on to help launch Hee Haw that ran for more then 25 years with 50 million people tuning in weekly.

For more than 60 years Tapp has been making audiences laugh performing the world over purely for his love of the stage.

“I’m not at all tired of doing this,” he said. “I may be weary until I get on that stage and hear the crowd, and then I’m energized. “I’ll do this until I physically can’t any longer. If George Burns can do it until he’s 100 years old, why can’t I.”

Awarded the Order of Canada in 1998 for his work for medical charities including Canadian muscular dystrophy campaign. He also raised funds for the Tim Horton Foundation, the U.S. Shriners hospitals for children and Easter Seals. In 1999 Tapp was awarded the Order of Ontario – the highest honour in Ontario.

“There are four things I am most proud of looking back,” he said. “Tea with Gandhi, being Canadian and talking to the general assembly about humour in the United States, having dinner with Senator Ford and performing for Prince Phillip.”

Now at 87 years old, Tapp says his show is geared towards seniors. “I do lots and lots of old age jokes,” he said. “I’m old and I can relate so that’s easy. Keeping seniors laughing is what they, or we, need. I’ll also be playing my harmonica, which some people look at as a talent and others just think anyone can do it.”

Saturday evening I had the pleasure of taking in a show at Delhi's gorgeous Backstage Capitol Theater.What a beautiful venue ! I found the staff very helpful and pleasant and the entertainment,Joan Minnery and Memphis Motion's presentation of Legendary Stars Tribute Showcase,first class.

The performers,some of the best in the business,paid tribute to Buddy Holly,Johnny Cash and Janis Joplin,to name a few.It was an extremely exciting,polished,and energetic production.Anyone that didn't attend missed a great evening.

I'm really looking forward to visiting this well-appointed theater again on Saturday,June 6 to enjoy Miss Minnery's younger troupe of entertainers presenting their musical play "Backstage Dreams."I've seen these youngsters perform on many occasions and they are stupendous.

With much anticipation, Delhi's Backstage Capitol Theatre is re-opening its curtains to the community with a production of the classic Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night.

The show, which originally was set to run last summer, is co-presented by the newly formed Norfolk Youth Theatre, a not-for-profit organization that features talented young people from Norfolk County and showcases the aspiring young actors’ theatrical talents.

“This is a very amusing show,” said Bob Missen, director of NYT and producer of Twelfth Night. “It’s a very robust comedy and features all different genres suitable for everyone. It’s romantic, funny and dramatic.”

With the show only weeks away, Missen said everyone is in “crunch-mode” as they prepare the set and memorize lines.

“The talent that these kids show is incredible,” Missen said. “Believe it or not some of them are seasoned veterans and have been on stage for nearly 10 years.”

Set in the mythical kingdom of Illyria, Twelfth Night was the perfect production to open the Backstage Capitol Theatre because it is “a delightful wonderful mess,” Missen said.

The original play written by William Shakespeare was based around the lives of young characters, which Missen explained was prefect because this year, unintentionally, the NYT production boasts a cast entirely under the age of 20, including four students from Delhi District Secondary School.

“This is the classic Shakespearean comedy of errors,” said Coco Lee, DDSS student and lead character Viola in Twelfth Night. “It’s great to have a Delhi group here. We all bring a different skill set and combination to the production and we can freely bounce ideas off one another as well as learn from each other.”

Lee has been acting for as long as she can remember, and is excited to be reprising the role of Viola in this year’s production.

“We didn’t get to actually do the show last year,” she said. “It’s very fun to come back and play Viola again and portray her in a fresh light.”

Last September, the theatre was temporarily closed down by the county over safety concerns.

Since its closure, co-owner Jeff Maerten and the Maerten family have saved the Backstage Capitol Theatre by completing renovations and upkeep with the atmosphere of a European town square, complete with fountains.

“We are delighted that the Maertens have allowed us in there to do this play,” said Missen. “There has been a buzz around town about this for a long time, and we are pleased to say that we are making the production extremely professional in all respects. I can guarantee everyone will have fun.”

The production will run three performances opening on July 24 and closing on July 26. All performances will begin at 8 p.m.

Some exciting news to share, as of Friday April 20th, we now own 100% of the Capitol and have already started work at getting the place cleaned up and ready for use again. It will still be a while before we are ready to open the doors but after waiting over a year to resolve some ownership issues it's nice to be able to start work again, the timing for this is perfect as we are pretty much finished up at the flowershop.

We had an opportunity to visit with Joe Rapchak today. In 1934, at the of age 13 he was a ticket taker for the Capitol Theatre. At that time he made 25 cents a day. In the winter he had the additional task of keeping the boiler running. He remembers Rob Hambleton, the owner coming down from Simcoe every day to sell tickets, and people lining up in the hallway between the shoe store and pharmacy waiting for the second show to start. In those days there wasn't a concession stand. They sold popcorn in the city, but the smaller towns at that time didn't have such luxuries. Occasionally he had the opportunity to go upstairs to the project room. There was a projectionist and an apprentice who could become licensed after a few years of assisting. Prior to the movie starting the projectionist would insert a nickle in the film to mark the place where the second projector needed to be started, when the nickle fell to the ground they would start the 2nd projector for a seamless transition to the 2nd machine. Joe left the Capitol in the 40's but he didn't go far, he moved next door to the Imperial Theatre.

Cruising at the Capitol

Approximately 200 were in attendance at the Backstage Capitol for the Country Cruisers kick off party held prior to their departure to Nashville for an international dance competition. Childrens Theatre Classes - Summer Camp 2011

High-energy 2 week sessions in which
youth will produce a short musical from start to
Finish. Children ages 6 to 13 are invited to attend.
Everyone will have the opportunity to perform in
The theatrical production and some may also be
able to contribute through being part of the
backstage crew or working with costumes.

Registration Fee:

$250.00 per child plus HST
*10% discount for off registrations
received prior to June 1st.
Before and after care is offered
from 8:00-9:00 a.m. each morning and
from 4:00 to 5:00 pm each afternoon,
for an additional fee of $25.00 for mornings
and $25.00 for evenings
for the duration the session.

You need to double click on this picture to see any detail to it. Note the shoe store, and ladies wear in the capitol. There was a hallway down the middle of the theater behind the four doors you see in our 1933 picture and stores to each side. In talking with people we know there was a drug store on the side where ladies wear was prior to 1938, it moved up the street. A lot of people also remember Tony the barber where the shoe store was in later years.

The first advertisement we found for the Capitol Theatre in Delhi was for the 1934 release of Madame Spy and Counsellor At Law. They were advertised in the Delhi Reporter on March 15, 1934 (this Madem Spy poster was from the 1944 remake, haven't been able to find one from 1933).
